SOX SOFTWARE GUIDE

Choose the Right SOX Control Testing Software for Your Team

What to look for in SOX compliance software, and how the SOXLayer plans line up against it.

01What it is

What Is SOX Control Testing Software?

SOX control testing software helps finance, compliance, and internal audit teams organize and document the work involved in evaluating internal controls. Under the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, relevant public companies must maintain appropriate internal controls over financial reporting and assess their effectiveness as applicable. A structured testing process helps teams determine whether controls are designed appropriately, whether they operate as intended, and whether the supporting evidence is complete. SOXLayer brings control information, sample testing, evidence, review activities, and reporting together in one workspace, reducing the need to coordinate an entire testing cycle through disconnected spreadsheets and folders.

When evaluating SOX compliance software, teams should look beyond a simple checklist. The platform should support the practical workflow that starts with a Risk and Control Matrix (RCM) and continues through walkthroughs, operating effectiveness testing, evidence review, deficiency tracking, and management reporting. The right system can make testing status easier to understand, help reviewers follow the work performed, and make supporting documentation easier to retrieve when questions arise.

02Beyond spreadsheets

Why Businesses Move Beyond Spreadsheet-Based SOX Testing

Spreadsheets can be useful when a control environment is small, but managing a growing SOX program across multiple departments or entities can make manual coordination difficult. Control descriptions may be stored in one file, sample selections in another, and evidence in separate folders or email threads. Reviewers may need to reconcile several versions of a document before they can understand the current testing position. These processes can consume time that would otherwise be spent investigating exceptions and improving controls.

Dedicated internal controls testing software creates a more consistent place to manage control records, testing progress, evidence, and review decisions. Teams can work from an organized control inventory, document the procedures performed, and retain a clearer record of the conclusions reached. Centralized workflows also help stakeholders identify missing evidence and unresolved tasks earlier, rather than discovering them when year-end reporting is already underway.

03AI testing

How AI-Powered SOX Testing Can Support Control Evaluations

AI-powered SOX testing can assist with reviewing evidence against documented control test steps. For example, a team may need to examine an invoice, purchase order, approval record, and related payment documentation to evaluate a sample. An AI-assisted workflow can help compare the available documents with the control criteria, identify information relevant to the test, and provide a preliminary result for a human reviewer to assess.

Traceability matters when using AI in a compliance process. A result is more useful when the reviewer can see the supporting evidence and the source passage used to reach a conclusion. SOXLayer is designed to provide citations for AI sample test results so that users can inspect the referenced material rather than relying on an unexplained answer. AI assistance should support professional judgment, not replace it. Control owners, testers, and reviewers remain responsible for evaluating evidence quality, considering exceptions, and approving final conclusions according to their organization's procedures.

04Your RCM

Start With Your Risk and Control Matrix (RCM)

The Risk and Control Matrix is a foundation of many SOX testing programs. It connects financial reporting risks with the controls intended to address those risks and commonly records control owners, frequency, relevant assertions, and testing information. A well-maintained RCM gives testers a practical starting point for planning walkthroughs and selecting the procedures needed to assess design and operating effectiveness.

SOXLayer allows teams to import RCM information from Excel or CSV, helping them begin with their existing control documentation. Before importing a matrix, it is helpful to review control descriptions, remove obsolete entries, standardize naming conventions, and confirm that required fields are populated. Good source data makes it easier to organize testing and reduces confusion during review. Teams can then use the workspace to manage controls and connect testing activities with the supporting evidence.

05AI and manual tests

Understand AI Sample Tests and Manual Testing Limits

When comparing SOX software pricing, distinguish AI sample tests from manual sample testing. An AI sample test refers to an AI evaluation of one sample against the relevant control test steps. The result may be a pass, a fail, or an exception, but each test counts toward the applicable AI allowance. Running the AI test again on the same sample counts as another test. Additional reruns can be useful when evidence has changed or a reviewer wants to reassess a sample, so it is important to consider both the monthly allowance and the number of extra reruns included in a plan.

SOXLayer's paid plans include unlimited manual testing, while AI sample tests have monthly limits based on the selected plan. The free trial provides a limited opportunity to test the workflow using your own control environment. This distinction helps teams estimate their likely usage: organizations can reserve AI-assisted testing for suitable samples while continuing to document manual procedures as needed. If your team expects a high volume of recurring AI tests, compare the Starter, Professional, and Enterprise allowances before subscribing.

06Evidence

Keep Audit Evidence Organized and Reviewable

Reliable SOX testing depends on evidence that supports the procedures performed and the conclusions documented. Depending on the control, evidence might include approvals, invoices, reconciliations, access listings, system reports, or other records. Testers should confirm that documents relate to the period and sample under review, are sufficiently complete, and address the relevant control criteria. A file being present does not automatically mean the control operated effectively; its relevance and reliability still need to be evaluated.

Centralized evidence management can make this work easier to follow. Instead of relying on scattered attachments and informal handoffs, teams can keep evidence connected to the associated control and testing record. Reviewers can then understand what was examined, what the result was, and whether further investigation is needed. Storage allowances also matter when choosing a plan because the volume of supporting documentation can increase over a full testing cycle. SOXLayer provides different evidence storage limits across its plans, with larger or custom requirements available through the relevant plan options.

07Reporting

Make SOX 404 Reporting and Auditor Collaboration Easier

Testing results need to be translated into reporting that helps management understand control performance and outstanding issues. Depending on the plan and workflow, useful reporting may include control testing workpapers, walkthrough documentation, sample test results, evidence summaries, RCM exports, testing status reports, deficiency logs, and readiness gap reports. Organized reporting makes it easier to see what has been completed, which controls need attention, and where evidence or review actions remain outstanding.

Professional and Enterprise teams may also need more structured year-end preparation and external auditor collaboration. SOXLayer's Professional plan includes a year-end SOX 404 management assessment package and an external auditor package that can be shared with up to three auditor seats. The package brings relevant testing records, evidence, walkthroughs, deficiencies, and sign-offs together for review. It can help reduce repetitive document collection, although each organization and its external auditor must determine what documentation is appropriate for their engagement.

08Comparing plans

Compare SOXLayer Pricing Plans Before You Subscribe

The best SOX control testing software plan depends on your control environment, number of legal entities, user requirements, expected AI testing volume, and reporting needs. The free trial is intended for teams that want to evaluate the workflow before making a purchasing decision. Starter is suited to smaller programs with up to two entities and 150 controls. Professional supports larger testing programs with up to seven entities and 300 controls, additional users, higher monthly AI testing allowances, year-end reporting, and external auditor collaboration. Enterprise is designed for organizations that require unlimited entities and controls, unlimited users, or customized AI test volumes and storage.

Pricing should be assessed against the work your team needs to complete, not just the monthly subscription amount. Consider how much time is spent maintaining spreadsheets, locating evidence, preparing workpapers, following up with control owners, and assembling reports. Then compare those needs with each plan's limits and included features. Paid plans offer unlimited manual testing, but AI test allowances, user seats, entity capacity, storage, support, and advanced reporting differ. Reviewing these factors together can help you select a plan that matches your current requirements while leaving room for your SOX program to grow.

09Security

Security, Access Control, and Accountability

SOX documentation can contain sensitive financial and operational information, so security should be part of any software evaluation. Ask how access is assigned, whether permissions are scoped appropriately, how evidence is stored, and how changes are recorded. An audit trail can help reviewers understand the history of an activity and identify who performed relevant actions. SOXLayer describes role-based access scoped by entity, private evidence storage, short-lived signed download links, SHA-256 file fingerprints, and an append-only, hash-chained audit trail. Review the SOXLayer security page for details about the controls and protections described by the product.

Technology supports a control program, but it does not replace governance. Organizations should establish clear ownership for controls, define review responsibilities, manage access appropriately, and periodically assess whether their procedures remain suitable. A consistent software workflow can make those responsibilities easier to coordinate while keeping the evidence and testing history organized.

Talk to sales
What is an AI sample test?

One AI test of one sample. For example, SOXLayer checks one invoice approval against your control's test steps. Every test counts as one, whatever the result: pass, fail or exception. If you ask the AI to test the same sample again, that counts as another test.

Is manual testing limited?

Only during the free trial, which includes 50 manual sample tests. On every paid plan you can test manually as much as you like; only AI sample tests have a monthly allowance.

What happens if I use all my AI tests?

You can keep testing manually, and your allowance renews on your next billing date. If you need more AI tests straight away, upgrade and the extra tests are added immediately.

What happens when I reach my storage limit?

New uploads are paused, with a prompt to upgrade or remove files. Evidence you have already uploaded is never deleted.

How does the $99 first month work?

Your first month of Starter is $99. From the second month it's $279/month. The offer is available once per company.

Can I download reports during the free trial?

During the trial you can generate and preview every report. Downloads in PDF and Excel start on Starter. The year-end and auditor packages are included in Professional; during the trial you can see an example of each.

What happens when the trial ends?

Your account becomes read-only until you subscribe: you can still log in and see your controls, tests and evidence, but not change them. Nothing is deleted, and the trial's entity, controls and tests carry straight into your plan.

What's in the external auditor package?

Your testing, evidence, walkthroughs, deficiencies and sign-offs, organized so your external auditor can review and rely on your work. On Professional you can share it directly with up to 3 auditor seats.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. Monthly plans can be cancelled anytime and stay active until the end of your billing period. After that your account is read-only for 90 days, so you can still log in and download your reports and evidence.

Can I change plans?

Upgrades apply immediately, with the new limits straight away. Downgrades apply at your next billing date. If you are over the new plan's limits, nothing is deleted: the extra entities and controls become read-only.

Is my data secure?

Access is role-based and scoped per entity. Evidence is kept in private storage and served only through short-lived, signed download links. Every file is fingerprinted with SHA-256, and every change is written to an append-only, hash-chained audit trail. The security page lists what is built today.

Do prices include tax?

Prices are in USD, excluding tax. Tax is calculated at checkout based on your location.
